Long term Citizen Advocacy

Volunteer advocates work with a ‘partner’ who has learning disabilities. Together they sort out problems, and explore new activities and things to do.

Speak Out has about 25 volunteer advocates who are matched with a person with learning disabilities (a partner) . They work together over many years to explore new opportunities, sort out problems and make changes. The partner gets more confident about speaking up for themselves until eventually, they don’t need an advocate anymore.

Issue Advocacy

A Speak Out advocate can work with you to sort out a particular problem or issue. These are some problems people have:

  • They want to live somewhere else
  • They want to visit their boyfriend or girlfriend but feel staff or family won’t help them
  • They want to do different things during the day, not just watch television

Volunteer advocate support

All advocates get training and support to do their job well. All staff and volunteers have an enhanced CRB check to make sure everyone is safe.
