Fun, Food and Family?
Many people with learning disabilities face family issues.
“It’s really helpful being able to find out and talk through what my rights are. I also felt instantly welcomed and comfortable.”
For many, Christmas is a magical time for the family to get together. Waiting for Santa, tinsel and trees, games and chatter, food and fun. Being with your children at Christmas however, is much less likely for those parents with a learning disability, who are often over-represented in the child protection system, with an estimated 40% to 60% of parents having their children removed from their care (Wilson and colleagues, 2013).
Brighton and Hove Speak Out know that parents with learning disabilities can and do become ‘good enough’ parents when they get the right support. Through our new project with Sussex Advocacy Partnership, Speak Out is proud to be continuing our work supporting parents in their right to family life.
Our 1:1 advocacy helps parents and parents-to-be, to understand and be heard within child protection processes, and access the support and services to which they are entitled.
Support people with learning disabilities to get the family time they deserve this Christmas.
Donate just £12 today or £1 (or more if you’d like to) for every day of Advent to help us support people with learning disabilities to have their voice heard.
